About the Crete Senesi
The Crete Senesi region stretches out southwest of the city of Siena .
The region takes its name from the clay-rich soil, which makes up most of its uniquely beautiful rolling hills.
These often barren or treeless hills are cultivated mostly with wheat, its changing colors passing from the palest
green of winter wheat to living gold and on to the reddish brown of freshly tilled earth. Driving through this
region is like travelling through a postcard. At the far end of the Crete Senesi the vineyards of Montepulciano
come to life: home to world-famous wineries such as Avignonesi and Poliziano.
